Census Key: Agriculture

1860 U.S. Census: Agriculture Schedules for HadleyTownship, Pike County, Illinois

This census taker forms his capital J’s and I’s identically.  In first and last names, it is usually apparent which is correct, but middle initials are impossible to determine.  Rather than enter “J. or I.” each time this occurs, we have used the more common “J.”  Researchers should be aware that any middle initial given here as J could be I.

(Alternate surname spellings found in 1850-80 censuses for Hadley Tp.)  Discrepancies between names on this population schedule and the 1860 agriculture schedule.  Problems encountered in reading the enumerator’s handwriting.
